Recap of 10/18/12 Coordinating Call

Last night we hosted a call with meetup leaders and volunteers to talk about our upcoming Remix the Election campaign. I'm posting a brief summary of the call here so that participants can continue their discussion of some of the topics that came up.

Our next coordinating call will be on Tuesday November 8th.

  • Remix the Election Campaign: San Francisco, DC, Philly, New York, Chicago, and Austin are committed for actions. DC will likely plan something on 11/3, but other groups have not settled on a date. We ask that all groups submit remixes and commit to a day of action by Tuesday October 23rd so we can announce the actions the next day, and have enough time to plan outreach and support.
  • unPAC wants to give local groups stickers to pass out as part of the art drop planned on October 29. If you'd like to receive these to use in your actions, please email szelena@rootstrikers.org by Monday October 22nd.
  • Open Discussion
    • Bruce of Silicon Valley asked about the use of social media in the remix campaign, and whether there wouldn't be a complementary joint online action for the planned local direct actions. He asks the group for feedback on this idea.
    • John Lesko of Southern Maine/New Hampshire asked about a one-click way to access meetup groups on the website. Michael of Walnut Creek suggested this be a link on the sidebar. Rebecca of New York added that we should be using the tools available to us now to act, and avoid getting caught up in endlessly improving the website rather than doing the real work of reform.
    • Michael asked about the feasibility of a Constitutional Convention, and, more specifically, whether reform like what has been proposed by United Republic would stand up in the Supreme Court. John and he began discussing this in more detail on the call, and I suggested that they continue the conversation here.
  • Wrap Up: Since we ended on the topic of reform as laid out in Republic, Lost, I reminded the group of a passage on page xii: "If we understand the nature of this corruption, its solution will be obvious. The challenge, then, will be to build a movement to bring about that solution. Such a movement is possible. It as been built before. But to build it will require a different kind of learning..." I encourage everyone to read the preface carefully, and to discuss it here if they wish. It's a great reminder why we take the approach we do as Rootstrikers.
